How FanVote Works
FanVote turns thousands of individual fan opinions into the most accurate, unbiased college sports poll on the internet. Here's exactly how it works, from signup to results.
The entire process takes less than five minutes each week. You submit a ballot, we do the heavy mathematical lifting, and the result is a Top 25 that reflects the true consensus of college sports fans nationwide — not the opinions of 13 committee members or 60 sportswriters.
1. Create Your Free Account
Sign up with your email address in under 30 seconds. Your account is completely free and gives you full access to submit weekly ballots across all supported sports.
We use Supabase for secure authentication. Your password is encrypted and never stored in plain text. You can also sign up using Google or Apple ID for faster onboarding.
2. Pick Your Favorite Team
During registration, you'll select the team you support. This is the cornerstone of our methodology — it allows us to group voters by fanbase and normalize the results.
Your team selection is permanent to prevent users from gaming the system by posing as rival fans. We offer a one-time "Team Change" pass through our Premium service if you made an error at signup.
3. Rank Your Top 25
Each week during the season, the ballot opens (typically Sunday through Tuesday). Use our drag-and-drop interface to rank your personal Top 25 teams. You can edit your ballot as many times as you want before the deadline.
Don't know all 25? That's OK — you can submit a partial ballot. We currently support College Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, College Baseball, and Volleyball.
4. Your Vote Gets Normalized
This is where FanVote is fundamentally different from every other poll. We don't throw your vote into a giant pile. Instead, we first calculate the consensus of your specific fanbase, and then weight every fanbase equally in the national results.
For example, if Ohio State has 50,000 voters and Boise State has 500, both fanbases receive exactly one "seat" at the national table. This prevents massive fanbases from dominating the rankings through sheer volume — what we call the "Botnet Effect."
5. Explore the Results
Once the deadline passes, the National Fan Consensus is published instantly. You can view the overall Top 25, but you can also drill down by specific fanbases or conferences to see fascinating insights.
Want to know who SEC fans collectively rank #1? Or which fanbase is the most biased? Our data filters let you slice the results in ways no traditional poll can. You can also compare the Fan Consensus directly against the AP Poll and CFP rankings.
6. Go Premium (Optional)
Love FanVote and want to amplify your impact? Our Premium tier offers an ad-free experience, exclusive cosmetic badges, and the "Power Voter" status — which gives your ballot a 3x weight multiplier within your fanbase's consensus.
Premium also supports the ongoing development of FanVote. We're a small, independent team, and Premium subscriptions keep the platform running and free for everyone else.
